The morning star was one of the choice knight-on-knight weapons of the late middle ages.

The morning star was a spiked mace-like weapon, used to deliver not only piercing but also blunt force blows, which was effective against plate armor, where a cutting or thrusting blow was not. There are three types of morning stars. There are professional ones, used by soldiers and knights, which were made mostly of metal and have spiked heads. The second is a crude peasant weapon, made of wood, with nails comprising the spikes of most examples. Finally, the third type is the ceremonial morning star, which was heavily decorated and not intended for use as a weapon.
