Spear 02

A classic example of the medieval spear.

The spear is a pole weapon consisting of a wooden shaft, made usually of wood (such as oak, hazel and beech), ending at the top with a pointed head.

The head is usually made of durable materials such as flint, obsidian, iron, steel or bronze. Despite this statement, the shaft may just be sharpened to a point, as is the case with bamboo spears.

The head is normally forged into a triangle or leaf shape. Though the heads of fishing spears may be tipped with barbs or have a serrated head.

Spears may be divided into 2 main categories: those used for thrusting and those used for throwing.
